Paperbark Maple

Acer griseum

About

The Paperbark maple is a small tree with very distinctive exfoliating cinnamon brown bark. The leaves are trifoliate, with pubescence, turning remarkable shades of pink, purple, gold, orange and red in Fall. I remember first seeing this as a teenager in gardens in England. I so fell for the distinctive, textural bark that I came home and insisted my family have one. My dad so loved it, he sawed through a concrete slab to make a home for it outside my bedroom window. Even though I was gone off to college, it kept dad company and reminded him of our fun together. When it began to outgrow the original space, he hand trimmed it from our roof, even into his seventies! If space is limited, make sure to have this in your garden. It will be a wonderful companion in every season.
